Building Trust for Four Generations

1904 - 2024

Our History

Founded in 1904 as a builder of stone and masonry buildings, the O’Connor Companies has grown to become the go-to construction resource for academic and industrial clients, mechanical installations, comprehensive safety services, and maintenance for a host of clients across the United States.

For four generations of O’Connors, and under today’s leadership of Thomas O’Connor, III, the company is unwavering in its commitment to always do what is right for the client. We like to call it the old-school “handshake / my-word-is-my-bond” principle that fuels our work in pursuit of superior quality and reliability.

For 120 years, the O’Connor family has built relationships based on providing superior quality construction services and exceeding the expectations of clients.

McGahey & O’Connor was founded by Thomas D. O’Connor, an Irish immigrant who made his start as a stone mason who built churches.

McGahey & O’Connor completes 20 years of building a host of notable structures in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Thomas O’Connor & Company is incorporated, and Mr. O’Connor’s three sons — Daniel, Austin, and Thomas — help guide the firm and win significant projects in the construction and power industries for Boston Edison, Archdiocese of Boston, Mass General Hospital, the Hatch Memorial Shell, and many higher education organizations.

In 1948, Thomas O’Connor & Company formed Beacon Piping Company to provide quality mechanical piping installations. They quickly establish high profile industrial clients, like Gillette and Harvard University.

Thomas O’Connor & Company leads the way in enforcing industrial and construction safety protocol, and is one of the first construction companies to employ a dedicated safety department to establish procedures, monitor daily activities and enforce mandatory policies.

Consistent, vital attention to safety prompts the creation and incorporation of the O’Connor Safety Corporation.

Thomas O’Connor & Company completes several multi-million-dollar projects, such as MASSPORT’s Terminal C, The Senator Edward Brooke Courthouse, The Reebok World Headquarters, and the Brighton Landing Office Complex.

Thomas H. O’Connor, Jr., the third generation of the O’Connors, becomes president of the firm, after working his way up from project manager, running work for Boston Edison, Raytheon, MIT, Boston University and MASSPORT.

The Thomas O’Connor & Company is renamed O’Connor Constructors.

O’Connor Constructors’ Power/Industrial Division is officially recognized as O’Connor Corporation.

O’Connor Companies completes the first LEED Platinum certified building owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Thomas H. O’Connor III is named President and CEO.

The O’Connor Companies are thriving with Thomas H. O’Connor III, the fourth generation of the O’Connor family, as Chief Executive Officer & President. O’Connor Corporation services some of the largest central heating and cooling power plant projects in New England; Beacon Piping is consistently ranked in the top 10 mechanical contractors in the Boston area; and O’Connor Safety Corporation continues to provide professional safety services to owners and contractors.
